Coffee exports topped 800,000 tons, worth US$1.3 billion in the first nine months of this year, the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa) announced at an annual meeting November 6 in Ho Chi Minh City.
The whole year forecast is for exports to reach 1.15 million tons, bringing revenues of $1.75 billion, it said.
Coffee exports rose 14.9 percent in volume year-on-year, but fell 19.2 percent in value due to the effect of global financial crisis.
In Vietnam, coffee currently grows on an area of 521,000 hectares, 500 hectares lower than last year.
Expected output of next year’s crop is to reach more than one million tons, a drop of 700 tons than previous crop due to nearly 7,000 hectares of coffee trees damaged by recent storms.
Vietnam exports coffee to 88 countries and territories and is the second largest coffee exporter in the world. However, according to a report by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) on September 1, 75 percent of Vietnamese coffee did not meet quality improvement standards.
This has seriously damaged the fame of Vietnamese coffee on the global market, it said, adding that firms should improve the quality of their produce, as well as ensure food safety and hygiene.
